For me, wood pellets are more accessable than cord wood this winter. I really didn't want to spend the money(~$2000+) on a pellet stove that would then require electricity(200watts/hr) to heat my home. That would defeat the whole purpose of burning wood/pellets.
I purchased the smaller insert.

I tried just filling the basket with pellets, pouring gel on top, lighting it, and walking away. I usually had to relight 2-3 times. All the heat rises and is lost. I tried the gel on the sides and top. This worked better but used much more gel than I wanted.

My wood stove has an optional 30watt fan to push warm air out. Fan only works when temp has reached a certain point. Basket + Pellets + gel = 1.5hrs before fan would turn on.

What works best for me: Pellets and 3, 2"� pieces of wood.

Basket + Pellets + 2" wood + gel = 10min before fan turns on.
I fill the basket 3/4 of the way. I place 2 pieces of wood on top of the basket. I also place a piece up front. I pour a line of burn gel on the pellets and then ignite.
The wood ignites, traps the heat on the pellets, and the pellets burn evenly.

This will have a good burn for 2.5 hours. The pellets burn on top, the sides and surprisingly, the bottom. The heat is hot and intense for the 2.5 hrs.

The wood creates hot/long lasting embers inside and around the basket.

The embers are key. When the flames die down, I only need to throw in another scoop of pellets to sustain a fire.
