With its full-length zipper in lieu of buttons, Fjällräven’s G-1000 Shirt stands somewhere between a shirt and a light jacket. While it can be worn as a shirt on top of an undershirt or thermal base layer, the material is so bulky that you'll probably want to wear it as a jacket instead of tucking it into your pants like a shirt. I originally bought this shirt for a trip to a sub-Saharan African country where malaria is rife, having heard that G-1000 fabric is mosquito-proof, but the canvas-like thickness of the material makes this unsuitable for very hot climates (by "hot" I mean around 30 degrees C), so I'd be more inclined to get a Fjällräven shirt with G-1000 Lite fabric instead of G-1000 Standard for the tropics.

However, in the course of other travels among the mountains of Eastern Europe, this has proven a wise purchase. Fjällräven gear is extremely durable, so while you'll initially spend what seems an inordinate sum, the clothing will last you years. Even if the fabric snags on branches in the forest, it doesn't rip, and even if you get campfire soot and mud on it, it cleans off easily. The design is ideal for the exertions of the outdoors: there are two small holes under each armpit to allow moisture to escape, and you can treat certain portions of the shirt with Fjällräven's Greenland Wax or another all-natural canvas wax in order to waterproof the material. Even without the wax, which would impart slightly more protection, G-1000 is surprisingly windproof, almost as much as a fleece.

It might be best to order a size smaller than you think you need: I bought a small and even Fjällräven's smallest size is a bit big on me (and I'd like to think that I don't have too freakish a build).
