Masahiro - Red Anodized Carbon Steel Katana Sword Review

Neither the description nor any included paperwork describe what kind of carbon steel this is. Absent any such documentation, I am going to assume it is only 1045 carbon steel. My blade came somewhat sharp, but it was neither dull nor remotely razor sharp. As another reviewer noted, there is no hamon, and therefore no differential hardening. This same reviewer got a katana with a blade loose in the tsuka. I too, originally got a loose blade, but I complained, and found out this was not usual. The seller (got mine on Ebay) informed me that the others in stock were not loose, and sent me a replacement. The replacement is not at all loose, and it is double-pegged, although one peg is under the thick, leather ito wrap.

Regarding the ito wrap, it takes some acclimation. It makes the tsuka larger in diameter than usual, and is rougher on your hands when put through the motions. The overall weight is heavier than average. So my final sword is a sturdy sword... for a 1045 knock-off. I would not want to take this thing into battle against anything other than another 1045 carbon steel blade or less, however! That being said, though, it is a gorgeous piece. The bronze anodized coating, the leather ito, and the attractive, if plain, tsuba make this a fine addition to a well-rounded sword collection: definitely among my more attractive pieces.

If you aren't a collector, however, and seek one, battle-ready katana, do not be hypnotized by the beauty of this katana, and look elsewhere. It takes more than "full-tang" to truly be combat sufficient. If you aren't both 1. dealing with at least 1060 carbon steel and 2. it isn't differentially hardened, then you don't have a katana in any meaningful sense of the word, and you likely don't have a sword sufficient for actual combat or cutting hard targets.

It is good for practicing technique, however. I keep my expensive katanas in a place where it's more difficult to access them. I display this piece openly, and so I can access it easily. As a result, I often take it in the yard to practice technique, although I do not actually cut any targets with it.

I am pleased with this sword overall, but I know what I have, and what I don't have, and what I have is one beautiful & unique sword that would not hold its own in combat or under generally rough conditions.
