Leki Khumbu Aergon Speedlock Trekking Pole, Black Review

I've had these poles for some time now and they have saved my bacon more than once. I've used them as crutches to limp back to camp when my feet are too blistered to walk normally. I've used them to clear trails and bushwack through brush when lost. And I mean really wacking at things. These poles take abuse like no other and are straight as the day I've bought them.

This model is one of the less expensive Leki poles but they also happen to be one of the strongest and stiffest ones they make. This is because the Khumbu poles are thicker in diameter than others and have bigger speeklock mechanisms. My wife uses Leki ultralite poles, and while those are a higher end model, and lighter and more expensive, they are skinnier and not as stiff as the Khumbus.

The speedlocks are the best out there and fast to adjust, which is great for those of us who like to fiddle around to get the right height for secific terrain on the trail. The Black Diamond locking mechanism seems like such a chore to change compared to these. The grips on these are also excellent and really fit my hand well. However, I prefer to grip these poles with the top with my palm. The grip is rounded on top and allows this like no other pole I have tried, and I have tried a lot.

I see only 2 downsides to these poles: 1) The lower sliding tube can slide out a few inches when the pole is collapsed. This means you have the store the poles upside down when packing them or the bottom part will slide out. 2) The bottom slider fits tight so the best way to collapse the poles is to puch down on them with the tips on the ground. If you try to collapse them in your hands you can pinch your hand very easily, which smarts. I love these poles so much I don't care about these two things.

If you need an awesome bombproof pole and don't mind a bit of extra weight, get these. A great investment.
