Titanium is an expensive raw material, refining it generates a lot of pollution, it is costly and difficult to machine, and it is a relatively poor conductor of heat (unlike aluminum). It is also very strong and durable (no anodizing to wear or scratch off) and above all, it is beautiful. There have been less expensive (limited edition) titanium lights using a 123 cell, there are one or two lights currently offered by other manufacturers priced in the $70 to $150 range, but for a titanium light with sophisticated magnetic level control, and of this robustness and beauty, this level of workmanship, you have to pay a lot more than Sunwayman's asking price. The light source, a Cree XM-L U3, until quite recently the most efficient lamp Cree offered, has an exceptionally beautiful tint and throws a very wide spot. This makes it rather unsuitable for objects at a distance. Maximum brightness is very impressive and lights up a wide area. Firefly mode, which Sunwayman claims runs for a month on a CR123, is not just for emergencies but is quite useful around the house when you don't want to disturb others. The sole reason for a four- rather than a five-star rating is that the output on Low with a CR123 is around 1 lumen, more or less useless for outdoor walking. To reach the specified 10 lumen output on Low requires an RCR123, and while 10 lumen is definitely adequate for outdoor walking, an RCR123 averages 750mAh compared to a CR123 at 1300 mAh, which translates to around 40% less run time. It is possible to design a flashlight that is fully voltage regulated for both lithium and lithium-ion cells, but Sunwayman choose not to do so; the additional engineering and materials may have increased the retail price considerably. I primarily use CR123s and the lack of a useful Low output is disadvantageous.
