We have owned some kind of balance bike for 3 years now. My oldest played on one in the back yard for a couple of months and learned to ride his pedal bike without training wheels when he was 4, without falling once! That's why a I gave it a 5 star rating for educational value - physical education.

The first couple of bikes we had were wooden, and they looked worn within a month. All 3 broke within 2 years. In their defense, they were used regularly and outside. We bought 2 of these Joovy bikes to replace them for our twins. My kids love the look of them. They are slightly taller, which is good for us. They go faster down our little slope, which had me holding my breath at first, but they've loved it. They quickly learned to use a hand brake, which is a neat feature.

I gave it four stars on durability because after 2 months the foam grips on the handlebars are starting to scruff and tear a little. Granted, it gets played with for about 3 hours most days by my kids and several neighborhood kids, but I know I'll have to replace those within a year somehow. Other than that, no complaints.

Bottom line: Yes, you should get your kids a balance bike. They will love it, and you will love what they get out of it. It makes more sense to spend a little more to get a metal one that will last a long time, because even after they know how to ride a regular bike, they still think it's fun to play with. The Joovy products I've owned (a double umbrella stroller and 2 of these bikes) have been good quality and worth the reasonable amount of extra money for the durability.
