I have just received the Black/Charcoal, Medium pair from Amazon and got the exact same problem as the others. The elastic cords are totally defective. They cracked and stretched out when I pulled them. I contacted Swix by email asking for the replacement cords. If they don't respond within a few days with a solution, I will return them to Amazon. Although they are very nice gloves other than the problem, I am still going to give only one star to warn other people.

UPDATE 1: I sent email with pictures to the email address on Swix USA website asking for replacement elastic cords. However, because I did not hear from them after 4 days, I called their number on their website. I was able to talk to a live woman, who was rude and not very helping. She told me to deal with Amazon because they do not deal directly with consumers but only through dealers/distributors. She said that they do not have any customer service/warrnty department to take care of it.

Swix makes the following warranty claim, but it does not seem that they are keeping the promise. "SWIX Sport USA, Inc. warrants to the purchaser that its products are free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year from the date of purchase from SWIX Sport USA, Inc." She also said that even after 30 days return preriod with Amazon, consumers should still deal with Amazon for any warranty claim.

Although the gloves look very nice other than the defective elastic cords, they are going be sent back to Amazon.

UPDATE 2: At current price, it's difficult to pass them up despite the obvious defect with the elastic cords. If you really want these gloves and are willing to replace the cords by yourself, you can order the following cheap elastic cords together with the gloves.

UPDATE 3: Considering the low price, I decided to give these gloves one more chance. I ordered them together with the elastic cords that I linked above with the full intension of replacing them by myself. Surprisingly enough, the pair I received this time (the third pair) came with good elastic cords. The first two pairs both had defective elastic cords. The second pair even had a hole on the leather covering one of the fingers.

Final Thoughts: If you are OK with dealing with returns if necessary and willing to most likely replace the elastic cords by yourself, order these gloves. They are good gloves for the money at current low price. I still rate them one star because you should not go through this level of quality issue with a pair of gloves which is originally retailed for this much.

MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's Sky Grey, XL Review

I saw a review of this jacket in backpacker magazine and became very interested in Montbell's product line. This is the first down jacket I have purchased. When it arrived, I could not believe how light it was. The weight is closer to a T-Shirt than a jacket. This is a little different, stylistically, for me. The cut was also a little different than I was expecting. This is not a big, oversized, super-puffy parka. For thermal efficiency, the cut is close (but not restrictive). Also the hem seems short to me, falling just below my belt but I guess that is because it is, technically, a mid-layer. The ballistic nylon shell is pretty much completely wind-proof and seems durable enough for around-town use but I would be mindful of it in more rugged environments, it is very lightweight. Which brings me to the weight/warmth ratio of this parka: Simply amazing. There is no lining! Just the naked nylon and some soft sueded fleece around the neck. All the warmth comes from the 800 fill power goose down and it is some kind of magic...warmer than any synthetic I have ever had and it breathes better. The only 'down' side is that if it gets wet, it can't keep you warm and it takes a while to dry out. This jacket, over just a t-shirt would be warm enough for temperatures down into the teens, and under a waterproof shell or other more durable piece, you would be set in pretty much any conditions. Quality is very high, despite the light materials. No feathers have come out and the two hand warmer pockets are virtually invisible when closed as the zipper is set perfectly flush into the seam. The main zipper is smooth and doesn't pinch the surrounding fabric. This jacket is priced considerably less than similar down mid-layers from other manufactures. I got this right at the end of the season so now I have to wait until fall to start wearing it again :-(

A very cozy, high quality, reasonably priced, versatile addition to a winter wardrobe. Especially for the minimalist.

NRS Roll-A-Cot Review

This grandma has finally found a camping cot I can carry, set up by myself, and sleep on comfortably! I have a bad back and my hands aren't as strong as they used to be. Unlike the "army cot" styles I wrestled with unsuccessfully and had to return, this cot is very fast and easy to assemble ... and you don't need substantial muscle, leverage to stretch fabric to connect the last leg, or 2 people to complete assembly. My 8+ year old grandkids can set up this cot without needing help!

This is the 28"x74" cot, with 15" or less of clearance underneath depending on how much sag you leave in the cot's fabric, which is adjustable for tension by turning the wing nuts in the legs. The other model is a wider 32x74. 250 pound capacity. There is also an XL Roll-a-Cot that is 32x84 with 18" maximum ground clearance and a third set of legs for extra weight support for 300 pound capacity. The cot design has no end bars, so you have the full length for sleeping or even hanging your toes over if needed. Pick the size that suits your needs.

The design appears to be very sturdy and durable, and I've read numerous reviews that indicate long time owners have found this to be true. The support structure frame is premium grade aluminum alloy, and the top is a strong mesh of 1000 denier polyester with welded seams. The legs supporting the cot are vertical to the floor and are rubber capped, which should protect a tent floor.

The mesh fabric bed will allow summer heat ventilation, but requires blocking the mesh and air flow for cooler weather use. People accustomed to the typical "army cot" solid fabric tops will find this cot needs the extra insulation sooner due to the mesh fabric. I prefer a bit more "yield with support" for sleeping and my partly inflated Therm-a-Rest camping pad fits the cot bed just fine for increased comfort.

The rectangular mesh "pouch" used for cot storage also attaches to the side for small gear storage, as shown in the image. The carry handle is secured to both sides of the pouch, so don't try to separate it at that location thinking there is velcro. With a bit of creativity the bedside storage can be more useful as a "nightstand" instead of a single large pocket where smaller items might get harder to locate. Try adding velcro attached (or clip-on) smaller pockets sized to suit your typical smaller storage needs, such as a paperback book or flashlight. Or if you wear glasses, use a clip-on carry case so they are protected and found more easily later.

A small, lightweight (just over 10 lbs.) footprint for storage and use, this cot would also be useful for an overnight guest. A bit too long (when collapsed) for backpacking hikers for any real distance, but it could be packed into the backcountry on a mule. Ideal for car camping, tent camping, backyard kid camping, etc., particularly for folks who don't want to wrestle with "major muscle required" cot assembly yet still end up with a sturdy, comfortable cot.

The only regret in my investment is this cot design doesn't allow for the attachment of a "Cot Tree" at the foot of the cot where I can hang up my hat, coat, etc., to keep them off the tent floor. Perhaps I can adapt an old camera tripod ... ;-)

Taylor Made Products Dock Float (24" x 48" x 16"H) Review

I ordered two of these floats from Amazon for a dock build project and it arrived in a nice heavy white plastic bag. The float itself is well made, straight and with a nice finish to the plastic. I was impressed.

I later needed 2 more since my build plans changed; however they weren't available from Amazon any longer (price increased too), so I ordered 2 similar same sized floats from Home Depot (Permafloat), thinking it looked similar and the differences shouldn't be noticeable. Boy was I wrong! The Permafloats arrived without any packaging and were somewhat dirty. The plastic looked inferior, had a rougher finish and there were bulges in some areas. The quality was a level or two below the Taylor Made one...so much so that I decided that I simply could not use them and I will return them to HD or keep them and use them in some dock rebuild where the float is hidden.

So in short, these Taylor Made floats are an excellent product and I do plan on ordering more. They put the other product to shame!

Update: I've purchased another pair from an outside vendor and I should note that it came shipped without a bag and also not as nicely finished as the first pair of Taylor Made floats, so be aware that there may even be variation within the Taylor Made manufacturing. Regardless, even the not as nice set is much better than the Permafloat set.
